Millions of dollars are spent on fad
diets that have little effect on weight. For instance, people on a weight loss
program are likely to regain:
-
1/3 - 2/3 of their lost weight within
one year
-
Nearly all of their lost weight within
five years
Some people also tend to fall into the
following traps when dieting:
-
Binge eating
-
Purge food (vomit)
-
Restrict food intake too much
-
Over exercise
-
Have poor health
-
Become depressed
-
Develop an eating disorder.
It is common in the developed countries for nearly every
young woman and nearly half of all middle-aged women have dieted to lose weight
at least once, only to see the weight come back on. This 'weight loss, weight
gain' seesaw may put you at risk of heart disease and other health problems. It
has been suggested that just one cycle of weight loss and weight gain is a risk
factor for the development of heart disease later in life. People who diet
frequently have a much higher risk of developing an eating disorder.
